Pecorino is a native white grape from Italy’s Abruzzo region. While the name does come from pecora (sheep), it has no relation to Pecorino cheese (although it does pair quite nicely with it!). The grape nearly vanished in the 20th century, but has been revived in recent years, and has started to gain a following as a hidden gem of Italy!
Pecorino wines are crisp, refreshing, and beautifully mineral driven, with bright citrus flavors, delicate floral notes, and a touch of salinity. The grapes are grown high in the mountains near Italy's Adriatic coast, creating vibrant, fresh, and incredibly food friendly wine.
It is the kind of wine that feels familiar from the very first sip while introducing you to something completely new.
Lot 240 Torrontés, Salta, Argentina
If you enjoy Sauvignon Blanc or aromatic white wines, Torrontés deserves a spot on your radar.
This native white grape from Argentina's high-altitude Salta region is a natural cross between Muscat of Alexandria and the old Criolla Chica (Mission) grape. For much of the 20th century it played second fiddle to other white varieties, but it has since become Argentina's signature white.
Torrontés is bursting with tropical fruit, citrus, and expressive floral aromas. Its fragrant nose often surprises people, who expect it to be sweet, but the wine is actually dry, fresh, and beautifully balanced.
