Lot 143 was the first wine in our "Classic Series;" a range of wines selected for their ability to express the special nature of the classic wine regions in which they're made. France's Rhone Valley is a superb example of "classic," where vines have been growing for centuries, beginning with the Romans and carrying through to the modern day.
This Cotes du Rhone comes from the northern area of the southern Rhone. It is made from a blend of 50% Syrah and 50% Grenache grapes, grown on vines that were planted more than 30 years ago in soil comprised of clay and silt deposited by the valley's strong winds. In autumn, the grapes are harvested by hand and fermented by combining de-stemmed berries with whole bunches of fruit. This method of semi-carbonic maceration results in a wine with expressive berry fruit flavors and a fresh, but smooth texture.
Crimson red in color with inviting aromas of black cherries and raspberries mixed with gentler flavors of dried herbs and anise. Sipping the wine reveals layers of mouth-filling dark fruit and spice with a punch of freshness that transforms in a cool, peppery finish.
