The famous Barolo region in Italy's Piedmont consists of five sub-zones, each crafting its own unique expression of Barolo. Serralunga d'Alba is one such place known for its age-worthy and ethereal red wines. Here, wavy rows of Nebbiolo vines descend from sun-drenched slopes from its lofty medieval hilltop fortress into shady tree-lined hollows below.
Like the place, Barolo the wine is known for both its nuance and strength. Nebbiolo bunches are hand-selected for optimum ripeness of sugars and tannin and delivered to the winery where they undergo a temperature-controlled fermentation. From there, the wine goes through a two-year maturation in a blend of new and one-year-old French oak barrels. By law, the wine can only be released in the 4th year after the harvest.
Glistening garnet red with a tinge of orange, this wine is spectacularly fragrant with aromas of cherries, dried flowers, leather and tobacco. Don't let the lighter color fool you. This is a powerful red with an array of flavors starting with red tree fruits, and evolving into an earthy savoriness before transforming into a finish of flowers and sweet spice.
