As many of you know, a few years ago we launched Iron Side Cabernet Sauvignon. The vision was simple: to make a bold California Cabernet that was the best $15 California Cabernet you could buy. Together with our all star winemaking team in Healdsburg, we selected various lots of wine from some really top notch California vineyards, and blended those lots into one incredible final product. That wine, Iron Side Cabernet Sauvignon, came to life for the 2012 vintage, and we’ve been proudly making it ever since.
Iron Side is a unique product in our 90+ Cellars portfolio because unlike our 90+ Cellars’ wines that come to us as finished products, Iron Side is a wine that we make.
Of course, once we started making one wine, we wanted to make another. So we went back out to California and found some ultra premium lots of bold red wine from Napa Valley. Those lots came together to become the first vintage of Iron Side Napa Valley Reserve, which we launched in 2014. The first vintage of Napa Valley Reserve was a Cabernet Sauvignon, but it’s evolved into a red blend in the vintages since.
This year, we’re back with the third vintage of Iron Side Napa Valley Reserve Red, plus a brand new Iron Side Reserve Pinot Noir that we sourced from vineyards in Monterey. We are thrilled with how these wines came together for the 2016 vintage, and we can’t wait to share them with you.
Here’s a little background on these two new reserve wines. Both are available for purchase now!
Iron Side Reserve Napa Valley Red, 2016
Our third vintage of Iron Side Reserve Napa Valley is a blend of four varietals, predominantly made up of Merlot from Carneros and Cabernet Sauvignon from Howell Mountain. It also has a small amount of Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. The result is a wine with a chiseled texture and bold character. Expect a heavy dose of concentrated mountain fruit along with elegant and brighter notes from the cooler region of Carneros.
Every year, this wine morphs a bit based on the wines we put in it, the varietal blend and the vintage. For the 2016 vintage, we believe we’ve put together our best wine yet. It’s a little more Bordeaux-like than last year’s vintage, and it has more structure which will help it to mature really nicely in the year’s to come.
Tasting Notes: Packed with aromas of black currant, black cherry and dark chocolate, this full-bodied wine features alluring flavors of baking spices, black tea and tobacco.
Iron Side Reserve Pinot Noir, 2016
For our very first vintage of Iron Side Reserve Pinot Noir, we looked a little further south to Monterey, where central California’s coastal influences produce a cooler growing environment for the fickle Pinot Noir. This environment allows for Pinot to develop beautiful red berry fruit aromas, and nuanced flavors of earth, minerals and spice. Expect to find all of that in this wine, but also expect to find a Pinot Noir that fits with the boldness of Iron Side. This wine truly is made for those who like a Pinot Noir to taste like a Pinot Noir, but who want the weight and boldness that California can provide.
Tasting Notes: Fresh and full-bodied, this wine showcases generous flavors of cherries, plums and sweet spice amongst a bold background.
Both of these wines are available now at retail stores around the country where 90+ Cellars wines are sold, as well as on our online store. But hurry, these are limited releases and will go fast!
