Not sure which wine to drink on Thanksgiving? Don’t worry, this time of year hundreds of articles, blog posts, and advice columns always pop up telling you what to pair with your turkey. That’s fine, but let’s be real: drinking wine on Thanksgiving is all about who you’re with, not what you’re eating! So instead of telling you what to drink with your feast, we have five different wine recommendations that are perfect for any Thanksgiving situation you may face (and bonus – they’re tasty with turkey, too).
Situation: Your beloved but crazy aunt needs a drink, stat!
Wine Pairing: Chardonnay
Nothing like a rich glass of Chardonnay to quench your aunt’s thirst. The trick is to find a bottle of Chard that has the butter and oak that some people adore, while maintaining enough balance that the rest of the family can enjoy it as well. Our Lot 123 Chardonnay is truly the best of both of those worlds, so pour her a glass and then enjoy one yourself. You might be surprised by how much you like it.
Situation: You need to impress the in-laws.
Wine Pairing: Pinot Noir
Picking out wine for other people can be super-stressful, but we’ve got your back here. Pinot Noir is notoriously food friendly, and light enough that even die-hard white wine drinkers should enjoy it. Plus, our Lot 75 from legendary Russian River Valley has a refined flavor to show that you know your stuff (even if you spent less than $20).
Situation: There’s a wine snob in your midst.
Wine Pairing: Syrah
Maybe your cousin just took a Wine 101 class and insists on playing sommelier this year, or maybe there’s a bona-fide wine nerd at your table. Either way, pique their interest with something a little funky…for instance, our Collector's Edition Saint-Joseph from the Northern Rhone Valley of France. It’s complex and food friendly enough to knock this person’s socks off, and easy-drinking enough for the rest of the crew to enjoy.
Situation: Your whole family gets together at 10am
Wine Pairing: Prosecco
Just because your family eats at noon doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a pre-dinner sip (it’s 5 o’clock somewhere, right?). Our Lot 50 Prosecco is mellow enough to enjoy early in the day, not to mention the perfect way to get your taste buds ready for all those Thanksgiving flavors to come. Mimosas, anyone?
Situation: Dad gets thirsty watching the football game.
Wine Pairing: Cabernet Sauvignon
During the holidays, even a casual experience like watching a football game deserves a special pairing. Pour dad a glass of our new vintage of Ironside Cabernet while he watches the game and munches on leftovers. Warning: this combo may cause the most enjoyable post-Turkey nap in the history of Thanksgiving.
Now you can go into Thanksgiving beyond-armed with all the right wine for any situation. And above all, we suggest simply drinking what you like – and having fun with it. Cheers!
