It took its sweet time but summer weather has finally arrived! Long lazy days filled with sunshine, beaches, pool parties and boating happily stretch before us. If you’re like me your summer check list includes such items as sunblock, flip flops, beach chairs, bathing suits, and of course, wine!
Being outside in the heat and humidity is thirsty work and while hydrating with water is naturally quite important, I also want to make sure my cooler is filled with refreshing, quenching wines to chill out with. Here are my picks… Cheers and happy summer!
To be clear: Not all Pinot Grigios are created equal. There’s the run-of-the-mill bland style that’s the house pour at far too many restaurants and then there’s the GOOD stuff, full of pizzazz and personality. Case in point, the 90+ Cellars Lot 42. Clean and crisp with lovely minerality and notes of apple and pear, this is a Pinot so good they’d drink it in Italy. Have a glass (or three) dockside with fresh oysters, fried clams or goat cheese on a baguette, heavenly!
PLUS Lot 42 Pinot Grigio has an amazing limited edition label for summer that I can’t stop staring at (along with Lot 2 Sauvignon Blanc!)
How cool is the canned wine trend this summer?! To say they are popular is a bit of an understatement and I am loving them! The Lila line of premium wines includes a Rosé, Pinot Grigio and Sparkler. With their vibrant labels, the cans are so pretty but it’s what’s on the inside that really matters, and trust me, these are delicious, easy-drinking wines! They chill quickly and stay icy cold, making them a no-brainer to fill your cooler with when boating or at the beach.
With its high acidity, zippy tang and bright character, Sauvignon Blanc is one of my favorite varietals to quaff in the summer months. This release from Magic Door is on a par with a white Bordeaux: fresh and fun, rich and refined. In classic Bordeaux style it has a small percentage of Semillon blended in. What you get is a gorgeous white wine with notes of lemon and lime along with some melon and a bit of creaminess. Sip with lobster risotto, baked Halibut or a big bowl of steamers!
A little fruit, a lot of wine…sangria is summer in a glass! I am a huge fan of sangria but it can be somewhat labor intensive when making it from scratch. Enter Mija. I’ve had some other pre-mades that fell way short in the flavor department but Mija takes the concept to a whole new level. Fresh and fruity, the new white Mija tastes just like homemade, without all the work! A blend of guava, orange, lime and lychee fruits with white wine, it’s lip-smacking juicy good! I prefer white sangria myself but the red is equally excellent and a can’t miss option. And the cool flip-top on the bottle makes it perfect for trips to the beach.
Serve Mija Red and White Sangria with fruit, over ice, or add Lot 50 Prosecco to make it a bubbly cocktail that will be the life of your summer parties!
